Price Testing

Safely compare original vs test prices without changing product data or your live theme. Learn setup, theme prep, multicurrency support, and how to launch/stop tests

Written by James Power

Price testing allows you to compare your current (“original”) prices with one or more test prices for the same products. You can measure how different price points impact performance while keeping your live Shopify product data and theme untouched.

Price Testing is designed to be fast, safe, and reversible. With AI-powered theme preparation, most merchants can launch a price test in 30–45 minutes.

Availability

Price Testing is available on the Shogun AB Testing Unlimited Plan. If you do not see Price Testing in the app, you may need to upgrade your plan.

How Price Testing Works

When you start your first price test, Shogun creates a private duplicate of your Shopify theme. This duplicate is used to safely inject the logic required to display test prices, while your live theme remains unchanged.

All test pricing data is stored separately from Shopify product data. This ensures your live prices are not modified, products are not duplicated, and customers always see the correct price in the storefront, cart, and checkout.

For stores that use multiple currencies, prices are automatically converted so customers see accurate, localized pricing.

Once you have reviewed and approved the duplicated theme created during your first test, future price tests will reuse that approved version. Setup is much faster unless your main theme changes.

Theme Preparation

To begin, click Duplicate & Start Theme Prep in the Shogun AB Testing app. Shogun uses AI to duplicate your theme and apply the required setup in the background.

You will see different progress states during this process:

  • Setting up means Shogun is preparing your duplicated theme.

  • Ready for review means the theme is available for preview.

  • Approved means you have reviewed and approved the theme, and it is ready for launch.

Theme preparation typically only needs to happen once. If your live theme changes later, you may need to rerun theme prep.

Your Workflow in Shogun

1. Prepare Your Theme

Click Duplicate & Start Theme Prep to create a duplicate of your theme. The setup runs in the background, and you will be notified when it is ready. If setup takes longer than expected, see the Troubleshooting section below.

2. Configure Your Test

Choose the product you want to test and enter the test price you would like to try. You can also add a “Compare at” price if needed. Segmentation options are available and work the same way as in other Shogun AB tests.

Make sure all prices are valid before continuing.

3. Review Your Theme

Once theme prep and test configuration are complete, click Review Test to preview the experience. You will see your test prices displayed on the storefront.

If anything looks incorrect, use the Contact Support option directly from the review screen.

4. Launch Your Test

After reviewing and approving the theme, click Launch Price Test. You can stop a running test at any time and resume a paused test later.

Note: Only one price test can run at a time, and if a price test is running, no other test types can run concurrently to ensure visitors see consistent pricing.

Keeping Prices Accurate

Your Shopify prices remain unchanged, customers see the correct price throughout the buying journey, and multicurrency pricing stays in sync automatically.

When a test is started, paused, or stopped, Shogun updates all related data to ensure pricing remains consistent across your storefront.

How pricing is applied at checkout

Shogun uses Shopify’s Cart Transform Function API to apply test prices dynamically during a price test.

This means:

  • The price is not changed on the product or variant in Shopify

  • Instead, the price is adjusted at the cart level when the item is added

  • The adjusted price is carried through to checkout and is the final price the customer pays

Because this logic runs within Shopify’s checkout pipeline, customers will always see a consistent price from product page → cart → checkout.

What this means technically

  • Your Shopify product catalog remains unchanged

  • No duplicate products or variants are created

  • The “source of truth” for the test price is the cart transformation applied during the session

How does this affect Shopify reporting

Orders created during a price test:

  • Are still associated with the original product and variant

  • Reflect the actual price paid by the customer (the test price)

In Shopify analytics:

  • Revenue, AOV, and conversion metrics reflect the test price

  • There is no separate product created for each price variant

This ensures your reporting stays clean while still capturing the impact of different price points.

Important Considerations

If your live theme is edited or the duplicated theme is deleted, active price tests will stop automatically. To avoid interruptions, it’s best not to make major theme changes while a price test is running.

If you edit a product’s price directly in Shopify while it is being tested, you may need to update the same product in Shogun and republish the test to keep everything aligned. For best results, wait until a test finishes before changing product prices.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

If theme preparation stays in the “Setting up” state for more than about 15 minutes, refresh the page. If it remains stuck, use the Support button on the card, and our team will investigate.

If Shopify rejects a file during setup, you may see an Error status. Click Contact Support, which automatically includes the information needed to resolve the issue.

If a test stops because the theme was changed or deleted, you can rerun theme preparation to create a new pricing duplicate.

Preview links may remember your test configuration. To get a clean preview, clear your browser storage for your store’s domain or open the preview in a private window.
